Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger flipping and you become starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
