Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
