A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the national leader.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
